The Local SEO Checklist Every Service Business Needs

If your business serves a specific city or region and you're not doing these things, you're leaving significant revenue on the table.

The Local SEO Checklist Every Service Business Needs

Local SEO is one of the most underutilised growth levers for service businesses. Unlike national SEO campaigns that can take 6–12 months to show results, local SEO optimisations frequently produce measurable improvements within weeks. Here's the checklist we run for every local service business we work with.

01. Google Business Profile: Your Most Valuable Free Asset

If you do nothing else, claim and optimise your Google Business Profile (GBP). A fully optimised GBP — with accurate NAP (name, address, phone), updated business hours, 10+ photos, a complete services list, and regular posts — will outrank most local competitors' websites for high-intent searches. Most businesses claim their GBP and leave it at 40% complete. Don't.

02. Reviews: Volume and Velocity Both Matter

Google's local algorithm heavily weights review count and recency. 50 reviews from 2019 will underperform 20 reviews from this year. Build a systematic review request process: email or SMS follow-up after service delivery with a direct link to your GBP review page. Respond to every review — positive and negative. This signals to Google that you're an active, engaged business.

03. NAP Consistency Across Directories

Your Name, Address, and Phone number need to be identical across every online directory: Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yellow Pages, industry directories, and your own website. Inconsistencies confuse Google's local algorithm and suppress your map pack rankings. Run a citation audit (BrightLocal or Whitespark are good tools) and fix any mismatches.

04. Location Pages on Your Website

If you serve multiple areas, create a dedicated page for each one. Not identical pages with the city name swapped in — genuinely different content about your work in that specific location: local client testimonials, local project case studies, local knowledge. Google is excellent at detecting thin, duplicate location pages and penalising them.

05. Schema Markup

LocalBusiness schema on your homepage tells Google exactly what type of business you are, where you're located, and your service areas in a structured, machine-readable format. It takes a developer about 30 minutes to implement and consistently improves local pack visibility.

The Quick Win

If you implement only one thing from this list, make it a systematic review request process. Review velocity is the single highest-impact local SEO lever for most businesses, and it costs nothing but a follow-up email.
